conditional sentence / if clause



Conditional sentence / If Clause
1.     Conditional sentence type 1 (Future Conditional)
It is used to express possible hoping or wanting in the future.
Pattern of conditional sentence type 1
If - clause
If + S + V1 + O
If + S + don’t  / doesn’t  + V1 + O
If + S + is/am/are + adjective/noun/adverb
If + S + is/am/are + not ) adjective/noun/ adverb
Main clause
S + will + V1 + O
S + will not + V1 + O
S + will + be + adjective / noun / adverb
S + will not + be + adjective / noun / adverb


Example :
a.     If you invite her, she will come to the party


f The fact : it’s possible that she go to the party



b.    Elaine will buy the drinks if somebody helps her carry the bottles.
f The fact : it’s possible that she buy the drinks

c.      If Alan and Rebecca organise the food, Mary and Conor will make the sandwiches.
f The fact : it’s possible that Mary and Conor make the sandwiches.

2.     Conditional sentence type 2 (Present Conditional)
it is used to express unreal hoping or wanting in the present.
Pattern of conditional sentence type 2
If + S + V2 + O
If + S + didn’t +V1 + O
If + S + were + adjective / noun / adverb
If + S + were + not + adjective / noun / adverb
S + would + V1 + O
S + would not + V1 + O
S + would + be + adjective / noun / adverb
S + would not + be + adjective /noun / adverb





Pattern of conditional sentence type 2  ( The Fact )

V2       ® don’t / doesn’t + V1
Were   ® is / am / are
Didn’t  ® V1

Were not           ® am / is /
Would + V1        ® don’t / doesn’t + V1 or will not + V1 or will not + V1
Would not + V1  ® V1 or will + V1
Would be            ® is / am / + not
Would not be      ® is / am / are

Example :
a.     If  I had money, I would buy the shoes
It means : I don’t have money now, so I don’t buy the shoes
b.    If Toni loved Laura, she would be happy
It means : Tony doesn’t  love Laura, so she is not happy
c.      If I owned a lonely island, I would build a huge house by the beach.
It means : I don’t own a lonely island, so I don’t built a huge house by the beach.
d.    If she were healthy, she would join the charity mission in the disaster area.
It means/In Fact   :  She does not join the charity mission in the disaster
                                area because she is unhealthy.
                                or
                                She is unhealthy so that she does not join the charity
                                mission in the disaster area.
 
Observe the following sentences
1.     He would come on time if the plane were not delayed.
2.     The students would not get bad mark if they studied hard.
3.     The flood would not happen if people did not throw rubbish
4.     If they were rich, they would donate some of their wealth for needy
5.     If I were a bird, I could fly away
